Clovelly is a picturesque privately owned North Devon fishing village that
has changed little over the centuries. It is set into a steep sheltered hillside
with stunning views.
Now a major tourist attraction Clovelly's white washed chocolate box cottages
and car free cobbled streets make it an ideal day out for families of all ages
and sizes.
Clovelly Donkeys
Clovelly is famous for it's donkeys which were used in years gone by to haul
goods from the small harbour up the steep winding cobbled lane to the main
village. Today donkeys are used during the summer months to ferry both children
and luggage.
Clovelly Quay
Clovelly has a history of smuggling and piracy and it is said that smugglers
used caves at the North of the harbour to hide their bounty.
Today the unspoilt quayside is lined with cottages the oldest of which is Crazy
Kate's Cottage named after a fisherman's widow who drowned after walking in to
the sea wearing her wedding dress to join her husband in his watery grave.
Also along the quay is the Red Lion hotel which offers rooms and a place to eat.
Clovelly Beach
Clovelly has a small but very pretty pebbled beach complete with a waterfall.
Behind the waterfall is a cave where so legend has it Merlin was born.
Other Attractions
Clovelly has a pottery which is open most of the year a Silk shop and craft
workshops.
Parking at Clovelly
Clovelly's steep narrow cobbled streets mean that it is car free but there is a
large carp park available at the visitor centre and parking is included in the
small entrance fee. For those that find the climb back up the hill too steep
there is also a Land Rover service for a small charge.
